Saona Island: The Postcard Beach Day from Punta Cana
Catamaran or Speedboat
Most operators offer two formats. The catamaran is slower and more social, with music and an open bar on the way over, ideal if the journey is part of the fun. The speedboat is faster and bumpier, gets you to the beach sooner and often pairs with a mangrove or coastal stop. Many premium tours combine both, sailing one way and speeding back. Choose by stomach and pace: rough sea days favor the catamaran.
The Natural Pool Stop
Halfway to the island the boats anchor over a sandbar where the sea is only waist deep for hundreds of meters. You step off into warm clear water, often with starfish on the sandy bottom that guides ask you not to lift out of the water. It is the photo highlight of the day. The stop usually lasts 30 to 45 minutes with drinks served from the boat before continuing to the beach for lunch.
What Is Included and What to Bring
Standard tours include round-trip hotel transfer from Bavaro, the boat rides, a buffet or barbecue lunch on the beach and an open bar with local rum, beer and soft drinks. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a towel, water shoes for the sandbar and cash for souvenirs or tips. Shade on the beach is limited, so a hat helps. The island is a national park, so leave no trash and do not remove shells or starfish.
